Puss In Boots: The Last Wish Movie Review
It's been 11 years since the first Puss in Boots movie. Puss in Boots stems from the Shrek universe and centers around Antonio Banderas character which is a sword-fighting cat. The first installment of the franchise was a huge success and it's surprising that it took this long to get its sequel. The Last Wish has been well received and I believe it may be a better film than the first one. So the first Puss in Boots was a story about Puss linking up with his adopted brother Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and his love interest Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) to do a heist for a golden goose. You know the fairy tale of Jack and the Beanstalk. It captured the fairy tale magic that the Shrek universe intels but give a spin on the story. So what could the writers possibly come up with for this movie? Well, I'll tell you. Careful4Spoilers as I do a deep dive here now.
The Last Wish is a different movie in itself where it handles anxiety really well. Our protagonist has been living a carefree life. So much that he hasn't even realized that he has used 8 of his 9 lives. Life can no longer be taken for granted so Puss decides to keep a low profile from the dangerous life of being a wanted outlaw. The problem is he has been targeted by a Wolf played by Wagner Moura who never fails to kill his target. The best part of this is that he represents "Death" and that is what he is called throughout the movie. This story is very intriguing as we know the phrase that is often used "there is no outrunning death". Thus that is what we are getting throughout this movie. We see Puss have multiple anxiety attacks and it is depicted very well in the movie.
Now Puss in Boots would not be the movie it is without a group of fairytale characters in which we got some goodies. Jack Horner is played by John Mulaney and Goldilocks is played by Florence Pugh. I think Goldilocks and the 3 bears stole the show. The interactions and chemistry between the characters were hilarious. To round off the cast Salma Hayek returns as Kitty and we get a new character Perrito played by Harvey Guillién. This makes a new trio as Zach Galifianakis doesn't return. These opposing groups are all seeking a Last Wish upon a star all battling personal turmoil in their lives.
Overall this movie seemed to me to take a deeper dive on self-esteem than its original film. From an emotional standpoint being an older child adult like myself I can't help but really appreciate what they were doing with this story. I give this movie 🔥🔥🔥🔥 out of 5 flames. Check it out for yourself and thanks for reading. See you next time spoiler fans.
