Why 'Hellboy' 2019 Was Dead On Arrival

by: James A. Barnes

It’s an understatement to say that ‘Hellboy’ 2019 had a less than stellar opening weekend only pulling in $12M on a $50M production budget.

Although I didn’t think that the film was that bad, The studio chose a terrible release date for the film. "‘Hellboy’ debuted only 2 weeks before the premiere of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ killing any chance of the film having legs at the box office.

May is kicking off the summer movie season and ‘Hellboy’ is going to get lost in the shuffle of films.
POKÉMON Detective Pikachu’ debuts on May 10th, ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum’ hits theaters on May 17th, ‘Aladdin’ and James Gunn’s ‘Brightburn’ hits theaters on May 24th. On May 31st theaters will be graced with the presence of ‘Godzilla: King of Monsters’, ‘Ma’, and ‘RocketMan’

‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ and ‘The Secret Life Of Pets 2’ hits theaters on June 7th, ‘Men In Black: International’ and ‘Shaft’ both hits theaters on June 14th. ‘Toy Story 4’ and the new ‘Child’s Play’ film will hit theaters on June 21st and the latest film in the Conjuring franchise ‘Annabelle Comes Home’ will hit theaters on June 28th.

‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ is set to debut on July 2nd, ‘The Lion King’ on July 19th, ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood on July 26th, and ‘Dora The Lost City Of Gold’ on July 31st.

As you can see, the next 3 months are going to be jam packed with blockbusters and highly anticipated films which will completely take away any potential earnings from ‘Hellboy’. I think if the film came out in February instead of April, it would have had a better chance of making more money at the box office.

‘Hellboy’ cost $50M to make and the studio paid at least $20M on the marketing budget, meaning that the film would have to make at least $150-$200M for the studio to justify making a sequel, and at almost 3 weeks after its premiere its still at $21.5M. As you can see from all of the films listed above, I don’t foresee ‘Hellboy’ even having a chance to make the money that it needs to be considered profitable.

What did you guys think about ‘Hellboy’? Did you enjoy it? Or do you agree with critics who didn’t seem to enjoy the film at all and would you like to see ‘Hellboy’ get a sequel?
