The 10 Must See So-Bad-They're-Good Movies
In the world of cinema there are big blockbuster films like “Top Gun: Maverick” and the MCU Movies, Oscar movies like “The Power of the Dog” and “CODA”, and B movies like “Starship Troopers” and the “Sharknado” franchise, and then you have those films that are so bad that you just can’t help but have the time of your life watching it.
Here are my picks for the Top 10 Best So-Bad-They’re-Good Movies.
Mortal Kombat Annihilation (1997)
Rotten Tomatoes: 4% Critic Rating | 25% Audience Rating
Synopsis
Every generation, a portal opens up between the Outerworld and Earth. Emperor Shao-Kahn (Brian Thompson), the ruler of the mythical Outerworld, pounces when the portal reopens and slips through with his mighty warriors, intent on total domination and uniting the two worlds. However, he has only seven days to complete his task. In the meantime, opposition grows and warriors Sonya Blade (Sandra Hess), Jax (Lynn "Red" Williams), Kitana (Talisa Soto), and Liu Kang (Robin Shou) get ready for war.
Author’s Note
John R. Leonetti “Mortal Kombat Annihilation” will go down in history as not only one of the worst sequels ever made but one of the worst movies ever made. The visual effects are laughable, the actors are chewing the scenery and this film is the perfect example of a train wreck you can’t look away from.
Ultraviolet (2006)
Rotten Tomatoes: 8% Critic Rating | 30% Audience Rating
Synopsis
In the late 21st century, a vampiric disease modifies some people, imbuing each of them with superhuman strength, intelligence, and speed. Worldwide civil war looms as normal people, feeling threatened by their enhanced brethren, demand the extermination of the group. One such transformed female (Milla Jovovich) finds herself caught in the crossfire when she becomes the protector of a boy who is perceived to be a threat to humanity.
Author’s Note
Kurt Wimmer’s “Ultraviolet” has an interesting concept but the finished product failed to give audiences something memorable. As a huge Milla Jovovich fan, it’s always fun to watch her beat the shit out of hordes of bad guys so no matter how bad this film may be, I always have fun watching it.
Samurai Cop (1989)
Rotten Tomatoes: 47% Audience Rating
Synopsis
A samurai cop and his partner go after the Yakuza.
Author’s Note
“Katana…It means Japanese sword”
Directed by: Amir Shervan
The Happening (2008)
Rotten Tomatoes: 17% Critic Rating | 24% Audience Rating
Synopsis
An apocalyptic threat to humanity arrives out of the clear blue sky with a series of violent, inexplicable deaths spreading across the country. The cause of the terrifying phenomenon remains unknown, prompting science teacher Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg), his wife Alma (Zooey Deschanel), and his colleague Julian (John Alberto Leguizamo) to try to elude the invisible killer in Pennsylvania's farmland. Soon it becomes clear that no one is safe.
Author’s Note
M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Happening” is one of those films that took itself way too seriously and was way too heavy-handed with its message but watching Mark Wahlberg talk to plants and deliver some of the worst dialog I’ve ever heard makes the film worth watching.
Van Helsing (2004)
Rotten Tomatoes: 24% Critic Rating | 57% Audience Rating
Synopsis
Famed monster slayer Gabriel Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) is dispatched to Transylvania to assist the last of the Valerious bloodline in defeating Count Dracula (Richard Roxburgh). Anna Valerious (Kate Beckinsale) reveals that Dracula has formed an unholy alliance with Dr. Frankenstein's monster (Shuler Hensley) and is hell-bent on exacting a centuries-old curse on her family. Together Anna and Van Helsing set out to destroy their common enemy, but uncover some unsettling secrets along the way.
Author’s Note
As silly as “Van Helsing” (Stephen Sommers) can be, it’s always fun to watch Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale fight monsters and face off against this wacky version of Dracula.
The film also has one of my favorite Werewolf designs in cinema.

Street Fighter (1994)
Rotten Tomatoes: 11% Critic Rating | 20% Audience Rating
Synopsis
General Bison (Raul Julia), the evil dictator of Shadaloo, captures a busload of relief workers and holds them for ransom. Colonel Guile (Jean-Claude Van Damme) leads an international strike force to invade Shadaloo and rescue the hostages. Along the way, Guile recruits Chun-Li (Ming-Na Wen), a reporter and martial-arts expert whose father was killed by Bison years ago, two young con men (Damian Chapa, Byron Mann), and a sumo wrestler (Peter Navy Tuiasosopo).
Author’s Note
Steven E. de Souza’s “Street Fighter” is one of the best/worst video game movie adaptations of all time.
The script isn’t the best but I think this movie is pure dumb fun and Raul Julia’s performance as Bison will forever be legendary.
Batman & Robin (1997)
Rotten Tomatoes: 12% Critic Rating | 16% Audience Rating
Synopsis
This superhero adventure finds Batman (George Clooney) and his partner, Robin (Chris O'Donnell), attempting to foil the sinister schemes of a deranged set of new villains, most notably the melancholy Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who wants to make Gotham into an arctic region, and the sultry Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman), a plant-loving femme fatale. As the Dynamic Duo contends with these bad guys, a third hero, Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone), joins the ranks of the city's crime fighters.
Author’s Note
Joel Schumacher's “Batman & Robin” is without a doubt the worst live-action Batman movie ever made, but over time I’ve come to really enjoy Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ice puns, Uma Thurman’s extremely over-the-top performance, the terrible dialog, and George Clooney’s laughable performance as the “Dark Knight”.
“In this universe, there’s only one absolute…everything, freezes.” - Mr. Freeze

Jason X (2002)
Rotten Tomatoes: 19% Critic Rating | 25% Audience Rating
Synopsis
The year is 2455. The Place is Old Earth. Once the shimmering blue jewel of the galaxy, Old Earth is now a contaminated planet abandoned for centuries. Yet humans have returned to the deadly place that they once fled. Not to live, but to research the ancient rusting artifacts of the bygone civilizations that caused this environmental disaster. And little does the most recent landing party of intrepid young explorers realize the fate that awaits them.
Author’s Note
Jason Isaac’s “Jason X” took Jason to space and gave us some of the best kills of the franchise.
The film is pretty paint-by-numbers and really cheesy at times but it gave us all of the slasher goodness we could ask from a “Friday the 13th” movie.

The Wicker Man (2006)
Rotten Tomatoes: 15% Critic Rating | 17% Audience Rating
Synopsis
A reclusive lawman (Nicolas Cage) travels to a secluded island to search for a girl who has gone missing. Once there, he discovers sinister forces at work among the island's secretive residents, including strange sexual rituals, a harvest festival, and possible human sacrifice.
Author’s Note
Neil LaBute’s “The Wicker Man” has some of my favorite Nic Cage freakouts and will go down in history as one of the worst and most unnecessary remakes of all time.
Equilibrium (2002)
Rotten Tomatoes: 41% Critic Rating | 81% Audience Rating
Synopsis
In a futuristic world, a regime has eliminated war by suppressing emotions: books, art, and music are strictly forbidden and feeling is a crime punishable by death. Cleric John Preston (Christian Bale) is a top-ranking government agent responsible for destroying those who resist these rules. When he misses a dose of Prozium, a mind-altering drug that hinders emotion, Preston, who has been trained to enforce strict laws of the new regime, suddenly becomes the one capable of overthrowing it.
Author’s Note
Kurt Wimmer’s “Equilibrium” is the definition of an early 2000’s action movie and it’s one of my favorite films to rewatch when I just want to have a good time with some over-the-top action sequences.
I really like the concept of the film and Christian Bale's performance keeps me locked in for the entire runtime.
