The Academy Has Added A 'Popular Film' Category To The Oscars.
by: James A. Barnes
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have made some changes to the Oscar Broadcast.
The group's CEO Dawn Hudson and it's President John Bailey said that the Oscars broadcast will now include a new category for outstanding achievement in popular film. The Academy has also decided to reduce the ceremony to three hours and select categories will be awarded during commercial breaks.
Reducing the broadcast time is due to the Oscars feeling long-winded. The 2018 show was almost four hours long and was the least watched Oscars ceremony to date, dropping 19% from the previous year.
As of late the Academy has worked hard to make changes to the ceremony, for example they have opened the amount of nominees for best picture from 5 to 10. They have also worked to add some diversity to its members and have set a goal to double the number of women and ethnic minorities in the Academy by 2020.
Now let's get back to this "Popular Movie" category. I personally think that this Award is nothing but a cop out so that the Academy can say they are recognizing films like Comic Book Movies without adding them into the Best Picture Category. This is the Academy saying that there is a huge difference between 'good' and 'popular' movies. This is a clear sign to me that the Academy refuses to acknowledge Comic Book Movies as best picture material, and they've created this category to appease their viewers. This "award" is essentially a participation award to exclude films they don't deem worthy, and refuse to recognize for the major categories.
Those are just my thoughts, What do you guys think about the Academy's new category, and how this will affect the Oscars going forward. Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned to Careful 4 Spoilers for more updates!
