Shanghai Dragons Expected to sign Geguri
Late Tuesday afternoon, it was announced that the Shanghai Dragons expect to sign 3 new players that may debut with the team in Stage 2 of the Overwatch League. According to ESPN eSports and other sources, the highly touted Kim “Geguri” Se-yeon will soon sign with the Dragons. Overwatch League nor the Shanghai Dragons have officially confirmed the signing but sources are saying the deal is done. Geguri has said herself that she has signed with a “foreign team” She is one of the best off-tank players in Overwatch will be the first woman to compete in the league’s inaugural season.
Fans have asked about female representation from the start, specifically asking for Geguri, known for her Zarya play in the South Korean eSports circuit and the controversies around her. (She caused 2 players retire after they falsely accused her of cheating when Overwatch first came out.) She is a one of the few women in Overwatch eSports and is very popular in the Overwatch community, especially among women.
It was speculated earlier this week that Geguri would sign with OWL Academy teams. Initially, one team was the New York Excelsior which made sense because of the language dynamic. Her addition to Shanghai along with fellow South Korean tank players Lee “Fearless” Eui-Seok and Flex player Cheon “Ado” Ky-hyun is expected to go through some growing pains with the expected language barrier. Word is they have already begun learning Mandarin phrases to prepare for play. Another currently unnamed Chinese player is also expected to be added.
Shanghai has struggled in Stage 1. Currently 0-8 and only looking good in spots, it was expected that they would make some changes and additions. Current tank player Roshan has not been good and MG has been serviceable at best. With the addition of 2 tank players, Shanghai adds flexibility and depth at their weaker position. Personally I wouldn't expect to see Geguri about Week 3 or 4 after they get some time to learn their teammates and adapt to living in the United States.
