Google Wants In on Gaming?

By: Bryce L. Jackson

Google has been rumored to be taking interest in entering the video game space in some form for many years. According to Jason Schreier at Kotaku, Google is interested in 3 major arenas for gaming: A Streaming Service, Hardware, and Purchasing a developer to operate under Google. These rumors have stirred up again after Google representatives supposedly met with a few members of some big developers during the Game Developers Conference in March to pitch a project codename "Yeti", rumored to be a streaming service. Google supposedly also met with some more developers last month during E3 regarding a streaming service as well as feeling out for potentials of future partnerships with developers.

The rumored purpose of the Google streaming platform is said to operate like NVidia's GeForce Now (in Beta) where users with less powerful computing power can still play games with high graphical demand by having other computers shoulder than load. With the XBOX and EA launching their own separate streaming initiatives, Google looking in to making their own service isn't a far off concept to imagine. With more cities gaining their Fiber option, the high speed internet bandwidth needed to stream high graphic games is within reach.

Google's track record of following through with high concept, innovative projects has not been great (*cough* Google Glass *cough*). They have had numerous false starts with gaming hardware and the aforementioned Google Fiber has not taken hold outside of some big cities. Google seems to be posturing themselves to be serious with this endeavor and only time will tell if they introduce an official product.
