Dahmer: A Controversial Masterpiece?

By: Steven McGee

What’s up guys? I know I know the Dahmer series. Yes we are talking about it as well. But hear us out. I want to really dissect this series from all angles. So buckle in as I talk a lot about the Good and the very much so uncomfortable about the Dahmer series.

First things first let's talk about the obvious, the acting. Evan Peters was phenomenal. He was dark, twisted, and straight up frightening. There aren't  enough words to talk about him in this particular article but if you're on the internet I'm sure you've seen it. I know the focus has been on Peters but Niecy Nash, who played Dahmer's neighbor Glenda Cleveland was also amazing. Richard Jenkins who played the dad in this series was also a bright spot. Honestly this series was very well casted and I can't say enough about it.

So for those who loved this series I bet you are wondering how this series could get flak. Me myself, I also felt this way until I listened to what everyone had to say. I remember intially thinking to myself “The Ted Bundy movie people complained about not seeing any of the murders. So what is this too much?” Why on earth are people giving push back? So let’s talk about it shall we?

I saw a post that stated “My cousin was murdered by Dahmer and none of us were informed that this series was green lit.” I later saw a post that said a lot of my family are reliving a horrific situation with this series airing. It made me really think about the fact that I am not just enjoying a series. This is a nonfiction series with real events that ended in 1994! These victims had their lives not been taken away would very well still be alive. The victims' families are still very much alive. I then began to think, well it’s a true crime series, everyone can't be pleased. Then it saw that the families weren't notified. That's a huge drop by Netflix. Especially when the series is as great as it is.

All and all I wanna ask, have we become numb and insensitive as True crime watchers? The stories are great but these people were not good people and casting a spotlight on them isn't appealing once it's all said and done.Though this series will undoubtedly win multiple emmys is it all worth it? I'll leave you with that question and until next time we will see you all on the next one.
