2018 Comic Book Movies Ranked

by: James A. Barnes

Here’s my ranking of the 2018 comic book movie releases.

8. Ant-Man and the Wasp

I thought “Ant-Man and the Wasp" was fun, and my favorite part of the film was the dynamic between Scott and Cassie. Evangeline Lilly stole the movie for me and showed how badass the Wasp could be. My only issue with the film is that most of the humor didn’t work for me and I found Ghost to be pretty boring and generic. I liked the film overall, but I can’t honestly say that this is going to be one of those films that I’d rewatch over and over again.

7. The Death of Superman

The film truly brought this classic comic book story to life and even though I knew what was coming at the end, Superman’s death still hit me pretty hard, and if a film can make you emotional over something you already knew was going to happen, that’s a mark of good direction and smart film making.

6. Venom

I’ll be honest, I thought I was going to hate Venom, I thought of the trailers were terrible and I felt like the trailers gave away how generic the plot and literally showed the end of the movie in the trailers. I was right about most of those things but I ended up really enjoying the movie. The first 45 mins are really hard to get through but once Venom joins with Eddie, It was a lot of fun all the way to end.

5. Deadpool 2

We all know sequels are tough but Ryan Reynolds and his writers have done it again with Deadpool 2. I know I’m in the minority but I like Deadpool 2 more that the first film. I think it’s funnier, the action scenes were so much better, and the additions of Domino, Yukio, Cable, The Juggernaut, Fire Fist, and The X-Force only elevated my enjoyment of the film.

4. Aquaman

“Aquaman” was great! The film was literally a comic book that came to life. The film is big, bold, and is one of the most visually stunning and ambitious films of the year. James Wann is one of the best directors working today and he smashed this film out of the park. Patrick Wilson truly brought Orm to life and made me empathize with the character even though I don’t agree with his methods. Jason Mamoa was incredible as Arthur, he was badass but flawed and I really enjoyed watching his journey.

3. Black Panther

Black Panther was brilliantly directed film by Ryan Coogler and gave us one of the best MCU antagonists in Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger. Chadwick Boseman simply embodies T’Challa and Letitia Wright’s portrayal of Shuri was so much fun to watch as the smartest person in the MCU. The film also brought the Dora Milaje to life in a big way, showing their incredible strength and badassery.

2. Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse

“Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse” was absolutely incredible from beginning to end. The animation style was unique and fresh and it served as an incredible origin story for Miles Morales. It’s easily the best Spider-Man movie to date and I can’t wait to see where the franchise goes from here.

If you like this comic book movie, and you’re a fan of comic books in general, then you may want to check out the Vermin Rising Indie Comic. It’s got all the grit of Spider-Man, but with raccoons and cats thrown into the mix.

  1. Avengers: Infinity War

“Avenger: Infinity War” was everything I wanted in a comic book movie, It brought the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy together to save the universe against one of the greatest villains in the Marvel Comic Universe. The film had real stakes and ended with Thanos accomplishing his goal, leaving our heroes forever changed. The visuals were stunning and each character had their moment to shine.
